The Brunswick Hen’s Shed began in 2022 with a simple idea – to create a welcoming and supportive environment where women aged 18 and over could come together, learn practical skills, build confidence and enjoy the satisfaction of creating something themselves.

What started as an opportunity for women to learn the basics of DIY has grown into a wonderful part of our Shed community, attracting women from Brunswick Junction and across the Southwest.

Whether you have never picked up a power tool before or already enjoy creating and making things, you are welcome here.

One of the best things about the Hen’s Shed is seeing someone discover that they really can do something they may never have had the opportunity – or confidence – to try before.

With support from experienced Shed members, participants can learn practical, hands-on skills including woodworking, safe operation of power tools, basic DIY, repairs, restoration, creative projects and modern workshop equipment.

There’s no pressure to already know what you’re doing. Learning from one another and having a go is what the Shed is all about.

And there is something pretty special about being able to stand back at the end of a project and say:

“I made that myself!”

The Hen’s Shed has never been just about woodworking and DIY.

It is about friendship, confidence, independence and connection.

It offers a chance to switch off from the demands of everyday life, spend time with other women, learn something new, and enjoy plenty of conversation and laughter along the way.

Members can work on their own projects, contribute to community projects, share skills and ideas, or simply enjoy being part of a relaxed, supportive and inclusive environment.

The establishment of the Hen’s Shed helped demonstrate how much demand there was for women to access the opportunities, equipment, skills, and social connection traditionally associated with Men’s Sheds.

Today, the Brunswick Junction Community Men’s Shed proudly welcomes both men and women as members, with women participating throughout our activities, workshops and community projects.

The Hen’s Shed remains an important part of our story – and a reminder of how opening the workshop doors a little wider helped our Shed grow into the diverse and inclusive community it is today.

You don’t need your own tools.

You don’t need workshop experience.

And you definitely don’t need to know the difference between every saw, sander and drill before you walk through the door!

All you need is a willingness to have a go, learn something new and enjoy yourself.
